Healthy Habits: Dr. Milena Gould Suarez focuses on running, nutritious substitutions
It can sometimes be difficult to find ways to stay healthy, so we’ve asked members of our Baylor College of Medicine community to share what they do in their daily lives to maintain a healthy lifestyle.
Dr. Milena Gould Suarez, associate professor of medicine-gastroenterology at Baylor, shares some of her healthy habits with us.
Q: What health decisions start your day?
A: I try to start my days by packing a healthy breakfast and lunch to take to work.
Q: What is your go-to healthy breakfast?
A: I have steel cuts oats with plain yogurt, berries and granola.
Q: What is your favorite type of exercise?
A: Running. It gives me a chance to de-stress and recharge.
Q: What keeps you motivated during your workout?
A: I usually sign up for a race or two to keep me motivated throughout the year.
Q: What activities do you do when you can’t fit in a full workout?
A: I take the stairs and walk laps in the hospital. When I get home, I take our dog and the kids on a long walk.
Q: What is your favorite healthful snack?
A: Nuts and fruit.
Q: Do you take vitamins and if so, which ones?
A: I take a multivitamin.
Q: What do you include in your child’s lunch?
A: I am lucky that their school provides a healthy lunch. The current snack favorites are Morning O’s, Pirate’s Booty Puffs and CLIF Zbars.
Q: How do you make an unhealthy recipe healthy?
A: When I make cookies, I use half the butter and substitute with applesauce. I also cut the sugar down in baked goods and use olive oil instead of butter when cooking.
Q: What is your nighttime skin regimen?
A: I wash my face with a gentle cleanser then apply a retinol cream and moisturizer.
Q: What hobbies do you have to help you relax?
A: I enjoy spending time with my family, working out and watching TV with my husband once the kids are asleep.
Q: What is your go-to Houston restaurant for a healthy meal?
A: I have been a long-time fan of Kata Robata and recently have enjoyed Vibrant as well.
Q: Do you use a pedometer or Fitbit and what is your daily step goal?
A: I use a Garmin watch with a daily goal of 10,000 steps.
Q: What is your favorite health tip that you live by?
A: I have a few, but if I had to pick a favorite, it would be everything in moderation.
