Healthy Habits: Kristin Wade enjoys neighborhood walks, high-protein breakfasts

Taking care of your health is a priority and nobody knows that more than physicians and healthcare providers.

It can sometimes be difficult to find ways to stay healthy, so we’ve asked members of our Baylor College of Medicine community to share what they do in their daily lives to maintain a healthy lifestyle.

Kristin Wade, vice president of nursing at Baylor, shares some of her healthy habits with us.

Q: What health decisions start your day?hh-wade-photo
A: I look at the weather report and my calendar to plan out what activity I will be able to fit in.

Q: What is your go-to healthy breakfast?
A: Skyr icelandic yogurt is my new favorite breakfast! It’s high in protein and not too sweet.

Q: What is your favorite type of exercise?
A: Pilates for core training and walking in my new neighborhood.

Q: What keeps you motivated during your workout?
A: I am most motivated when I have an “accountability partner” to exercise with.

Q: What activities do you do when you can’t fit in a full workout?
A: I look for opportunities to fit in extra steps either by using the stairs or walking to meetings.

Q: What is your favorite healthful snack?
A: Being a recent transplant to Texas, I am really loving the abundance of fresh, ripe avocados!

Q: Do you take vitamins and if so, which ones?
A: I do not take supplemental vitamins. I try to eat a variety of foods of different colors to get my vitamins the old fashioned way.

Q: How do you make an unhealthy recipe healthy (healthy substitutions)?
A: One of my favorite recipe substitutions is using non-fat yogurt instead of sour cream.

Q: What is your nighttime skin regimen?
A: I have a small basket with all-in-one make up removal and face-cleansing wipes, eye cream and a nighttime moisturizer. I keep it really simple or I won’t do it!

Q: What hobbies do you have to help you relax?
A: I love to read – and even better if it is outside at the beach, pool or park.

Q: What is your go-to Houston restaurant for a healthy meal?
A: SNAP Kitchen is a great place to pick up a healthy meal on the way home.

Q: Do you use a pedometer or Fitbit and what is your daily step goal?
A: I have a Fitbit and my goal is to do 70,000 steps a week. I am more successful when I look at it weekly because if I have a busy day and don’t get in a lot of steps, I will strive to make up the difference before I reset Monday morning.

Q: What is your favorite health tip that you live by?
A: Enjoy life in moderation!
