healthy-habits-othmanIt can sometimes be difficult to find ways to stay healthy, so we’ve asked members of our Baylor College of Medicine community to share what they do in their daily lives to maintain a healthy lifestyle.

Dr. Mohamed Othman, assistant professor of medicine – gastroenterology, shares his tips with us.

Q: What healthy decisions start your day?
A: I like to start my day with a 30 minute workout session and a healthy breakfast to energize my day.

Q: What is your go-to healthy breakfast?
A: Breakfast typically consists of a veggie omelet or a bowl of oatmeal with nuts and dates.

Q: What is your favorite type of exercise?
A: I enjoy cardio workouts, riding my bike and swimming.

Q: What keeps you motivated during your workout?
A: Time flies while listening to podcasts or talking on the phone.

Q: What activities do you do when you can’t fit in a full workout?
A: If I can’t get in a full workout I try to take the stairs as much as possible and walk a little further.

Q: What is your favorite healthy snack?
A: Nuts and fruits such as watermelon and pomegranate.

Q: Do you take vitamins and if so, which ones?
A: No, I get my vitamins through food.

Q: What do you include in your child’s lunch?
A: Fruit, cheese, nuts and crackers.

Q: How do you make an unhealthy recipe healthy (healthy substitutions?)
A: Baking instead of frying, adding/increasing vegetables and decreasing the sugar quantity.

Q: What hobbies do you have to help you relax?
A: Reading and fishing as much as possible.

Q: What is your go-to Houston restaurant for a healthy meal?
A: Fadi’s Mediterranean is great since they offer a wide variety of salads and vegetables.

Q: Do you use a pedometer or Fitbit and what is your daily step goal?
A: I’ve used it in the past, now I just walk as much as possible.

Q: What is your favorite health tip that you live by?
A: Maybe I didn’t live healthy yesterday but today is a new day and I can try again. Fitness and health need a constant recharge in today’s busy world, don’t feel discouraged by past fallbacks, get back on the horse and keep trying!
