Healthy Habits: Moderation, morning jogs help Dr. Jennifer Christner stay relaxed

Taking care of your health is a priority and nobody knows that more than physicians and healthcare providers.

It can sometimes be difficult to find ways to stay healthy, so we’ve asked members of our Baylor College of Medicine community to share what they do in their daily lives to maintain a healthy lifestyle.

Dr. Jennifer Christner, dean of the School of Medicine at Baylor, shares some of her healthy habits with us.

Q: What is your go-to healthy breakfast?hh-Christner-2
A: For on the go – raisins and almonds. If I can eat breakfast with my kids on a school morning – Cheerios with an occasional lapse of Cocoa Pebbles or Lucky Charms.

Q: What is your favorite type of exercise?
A: Walking or running outside first thing in the morning.

Q: What keeps you motivated during your workout?
A: Good music.

Q: What activities do you do when you can’t fit in a full workout?
A: Take the stairs.

Q: What is your favorite healthful snack?
A: Nuts.

Q: Do you take vitamins and if so, which ones?
A: I will occasionally take one of my kids gummy vitamins. I am embarrassed to say I like them.

Q: What do you include in your child’s lunch?
A: They always have fruit. But they also have chips sometimes, too. As an adolescent medicine physician who specialized in eating disorders it is really important to me that they approach healthy eating with an “everything in moderation” attitude. I tell them that nothing in extremes is ever healthy. Sometimes we have birthday cake for breakfast. It’s OK.

Q: What hobbies do you have to help you relax?
A: Running in the morning, scrapbooking, and reading a good (non-work related) book.

Q: What is your go-to Houston restaurant for a healthy meal?
A: Why would you go to a restaurant for a healthy meal? Doesn’t that defeat the purpose of being there?

Q: Do you use a pedometer or Fitbit and what is your daily step goal?
A: Fitbit – I’m aiming for 10,000 daily right now.

Q: What is your favorite health tip that you live by?
A: Everything in moderation.
