Students mean business at Baylor's summer programs
While many schools find their hallways a little emptier in the summer months, the halls at Baylor College of Medicine are full of enthusiastic high school and college students who are getting a head start in their medical and science training. Here’s a breakdown of the programs that students are participating in this summer.
SMART Program
The Summer Medical and Research Training (SMART) Program was developed to provide biomedical summer research projects for undergraduates in a supportive environment with supplemental educational activities.
The program offers:
- Nine paid weeks of biomedical-related research in a broad range of areas
- Daily seminars designed for undergraduates
- Free SMART GRE prep workshops
- Career development activities
This summer, 89 undergraduate students from around the country are taking part in the SMART program.
Honors Premedical Academy Summer Program
The Honors Premedical Academy at Baylor College of Medicine and Rice University provides promising underrepresented students in Baylor’s Bachelor of Science/Medical Doctorate programs, the Premedical Honors College and the Joint Admission Medical Program with educational and practical experiences to enhance their competitiveness in the medical school admissions process. Each year the program hosts approximately 25 to 30 students.
The program provides rigorous coursework in anatomy and physiology, as well as the opportunity to gain a greater understanding of medicine through clinical and other learning experiences in the Texas Medical Center.
This year, 29 students are participating in the program, with five students from the Premedical Honors College Program, a partnership between The University of Texas-Pan American and Baylor to increase the number of students from South Texas who access medical education, and 24 from the Joint Admission Medical Program, a special program created by the Texas Legislature to support and encourage highly qualified, economically disadvantaged students pursuing a medical education.

Joint Admission Medical Program/DocPrep Leadership Program
Each summer, 45 to 50 outstanding rising seniors from the Houston Independent School District and South Texas high schools are selected, along with 8 to 10 teacher mentors, to participate in JAMP/DocPrep Leadership Program, a week-long academic enrichment program at Baylor College of Medicine. The program provides health professions- and science-related activities at the Texas Medical Center, including medical lectures, college and medical school counseling, a communications course taught by Rice University graduate students and hands-on gross anatomy laboratory experiences.
Participants tour hospitals in the Texas Medical Center and observe surgery from a viewing dome. Program participants interact with Baylor medical students, faculty and staff. Baylor College of Medicine medical students serve as program mentors and accompany students and teachers to all activities.
This year, 45 students are taking part in the program: five students from the Michael E. DeBakey High School for Health Professions; 10 from JB Alexander Magnet High School in Laredo, Texas; 10 from Foy H. Moody High School in Corpus Christi, Texas; and 20 from South Texas High School for Health Professions-MedHigh in Mercedes, Texas.
