Healthy Habits: Dr. Samer Mattar enjoys walking on the treadmill

It can sometimes be difficult to find ways to stay healthy, so we’ve asked members of our Baylor College of Medicine community to share what they do in their daily lives to maintain a healthy lifestyle.

Dr. Samer Mattar, professor in the Division of Trauma, Bariatric and Acute Care Surgery, shares some of his healthy habits with us.

Question: What health decisions start your day?
Answer:
The first thing I do is drink a large glass of water in the morning and then follow that with a cup of green tea.

Q: What is your go-to healthy breakfast?
A:
Two boiled eggs.

Q: What is your favorite type of exercise?
A: Walking the treadmill on an incline.

Q: What keeps you motivated during your workout?
A: Audiobooks and imagining the view from the altitude reported by the treadmill.

Q: What activities do you do when you can’t fit in a full workout?
A: Use the stairs as much as possible.

Q: What is your favorite healthful snack?
A: I love tree nuts, especially almonds.

Q: Do you take vitamins and if so, which ones?
A: Over-the-counter multivitamins.

Q: How do you make an unhealthy recipe healthy (healthy substitutions)?
A: Cauliflower rice.

Q: What hobbies do you have to help you relax?
A: Music and reading.

Q: What is your go-to Houston restaurant for a healthy meal?
A: A new restaurant in my area called Just Falafel Vegan Café.

Q: Do you use an activity tracker or Fitbit and what is your daily step goal
A: Yes. Sadly, it typically is only about 8K, but on weekends and vacations, it passes 15K!

Q: What is your favorite health tip that you live by?
A: Make sure to get enough high-quality sleep and do everything in moderation.
