Healthy Habits: Adequate rest, nutritious alternatives help keep Dr. Carlos Galvani fit

Taking care of your health is a priority and nobody knows that more than physicians and healthcare providers.

It can sometimes be difficult to find ways to stay healthy, so we’ve asked members of our Baylor College of Medicine community to share what they do in their daily lives to maintain a healthy lifestyle.

Dr. Carlos Galvani, chief of metabolic and bariatric surgery in the Michael E. DeBakey Department of Surgery at Baylor, shares some of his healthy habits with us.

Q: What health decisions start your day?
A: I try to sleep at least seven hours and wake up naturally. Also, I usually do water-coffee-water in the morning.

Q: What is your go-to healthy breakfast?hh-galvani-graphic
A: Honey Nut Cheerios.

Q: What is your favorite type of exercise?
A: Jogging and 7-minute workouts.

Q: What keeps you motivated during your workout?
A: Listening to workout music from Pandora.

Q: What is your favorite healthful snack?
A: Kirkland Protein Bar.

Q: What do you include in your child’s lunch?
A: Granola bar with fruit and string cheese.

Q: How do you make an unhealthy recipe healthy (healthy substitutions)?
A: Replace bad fat for good fat (vegetable oils instead of butter), and oven-cooked instead of fried.

Q: What hobbies do you have to help you relax?
A: Listening to Yo-Yo Ma, playing with my kids, and golfing.

Q: What is your go-to Houston restaurant for a healthy meal?
A: Moved in a month ago so I don’t have a favorite one yet. But I found “Little Matt’s” (kid’s restaurant) where they have FREE wine and margaritas for parents while kids play.

Q: What is your favorite health tip that you live by?
A: I have a few. Don’t eat out, don’t drink soda, drink lots of water, and take the stairs instead of the elevator.
