Healthy Habits: Taking stairs, low-fat substitutions help Dr. Tamara Ortiz Perez stay fit
Taking care of your health is a priority and nobody knows that more than physicians and healthcare providers.
It can sometimes be difficult to find ways to stay healthy, so we’ve asked members of our Baylor College of Medicine community to share what they do in their daily lives to maintain a healthy lifestyle.
Dr. Tamara Ortiz Perez, assistant professor of radiology at Baylor, shares some of her healthy habits with us.
Q: What health decisions start your day?
A: I try to never skip breakfast. It’s the most important meal of the day!
Q: What is your go-to healthy breakfast?
A: During the work week, I eat a protein bar, fruit and drink water, which allows me to quickly fill up the tank and make it last.
Q: What is your favorite type of exercise?
A: I love walking around the neighborhood with my husband. It’s a great way for us to decompress after a stressful work day. Several months ago, we did the Insanity program together and it was a lot of fun!
Q: What keeps you motivated during your workout?
A: If I’m working out by myself, I like to listen to upbeat music. It helps me stay motivated! If I’m working out with my husband, he does the motivating. He pushes me to do better every day.
Q: What activities do you do when you can’t fit in a full workout?
A: I try to take the stairs at work as much as possible. That way I can easily fit some physical activity into my workday.
Q: What is your favorite healthful snack?
A: I love Greek yogurt! When I can, I add fresh fruit and granola. Delicious!
Q: Do you take vitamins and if so, which ones?
A: Over-the-counter multivitamins.
Q: How do you make an unhealthy recipe healthy (healthy substitutions)?
A: I try to substitute with low-fat or fat-free options any time I can.
Q: What is your nighttime skin regimen?
A: I use a balancing face wash and a good moisturizer.
Q: What hobbies do you have to help you relax?
A: I like watching TV. Movies, shows and sports are recorded in my DVR so I can enjoy them during my time off.
Q: What is your go-to Houston restaurant for a healthy meal?
A: I love, love, love Salata!
Q: Do you use a pedometer or Fitbit and what is your daily step goal?
A: I just got a pedometer so I’ll let you know how it goes!
Q: What is your favorite health tip that you live by?
A: Drink lots of water! It’s beneficial all around!
