Are mocktails the healthier option?

Mocktails on a tray with limes.Mocktails are often considered an alternative to a cocktail or other alcoholic beverage. Most contain a variation of sugar, fresh fruit or even tonic water. But just because mocktails don’t contain alcohol, does it make them healthy? Baylor College of Medicine registered dietitian Lisa Froechtenigt explains whether these nonalcoholic drinks have any health benefits.

Mocktails can allow people to still be comfortable in social settings without the negative effects of alcohol, helping to maintain a clear mind and a healthy liver and body. However, being mindful of a mocktail’s sugar content is essential.  Froechtenigt says that just because the drinks don’t have alcohol in them, people may think they can drink as many as they want.

“People who might be sugar sensitive or have diabetes might want to choose low-sugar options or even sugar-free mixes,” she said. “These drinks can be quickly absorbed into the bloodstream, so be aware of how they can affect your blood sugar.”

Healthier options to include in your mocktail are those with low amounts of sugar or prebiotics and probiotics that can help feed our gut bacteria and keep our gut healthy.

“Also, there are non-alcoholic gins, whiskeys and beers,” Froechtenigt said. “About one to two mocktails are best in one sitting while also drinking water.”

If you are watching the number of calories you consume, add sparkling water or natural fruit juices like watermelon, lemon or lime juice, which are great low-calorie options.

“These juices are also beneficial for someone who needs to watch their sugar intake,” Froechtenigt said.
