Congratulations to the recipients of CPRIT grants for cancer research!
Baylor College of Medicine has been awarded nearly $2.7 million by the Cancer Prevention and Research Institute of Texas (CPRIT) to support new cancer research.
Fifty-five new grants totaling more than $78 million were awarded to institutions across Texas, including three individual investigator grants to Baylor College of Medicine, to advance the fight against cancer.
Baylor’s grant recipients include:
Dr. Feng Yang, assistant professor of molecular and cellular biology and member of the Dan L Duncan Comprehensive Cancer Center
Project: Targeting AKT signaling in MAPK4-high Triple Negative Breast Cancer — $900,000.
Dr. Hyun-Sung Lee, assistant professor of surgery and member of the Dan L Duncan Comprehensive Cancer Center
Project: Spatial Profiling of Tumor-Immune Microenvironment by Multiplexed Single-Cell Imaging Mass Cytometry — $897,527.
Dr. Joshua Wythe, assistant professor or molecular physiology and biophysics
Project: Targeting Endothelial Transcriptional Networks in Glioblastoma— $899,847
“These awards from the Cancer Prevention and Research Institute of Texas will test exciting new approaches in two difficult to treat cancers, triple negative breast cancer for which chemotherapy and recently immunotherapy have been the only options, and glioblastoma of the brain for which current treatments are suboptimal,” said Dr. C. Kent Osborne, professor and director of the Dan L Duncan Comprehensive Cancer Center at Baylor College of Medicine. “Another important project will provide a better understanding of the immune cells within a tumor in order to predict which type of therapy would be best in an individual patient.”
To date, CPRIT has awarded $2.49 billion in grants to Texas research institutions and organizations through its academic research, prevention and product development programs. CPRIT launched in 2009 following a constitutional amendment to commit $3 billion in the fight against cancer over 10 years. In 2019, Texas voters approved a constitutional amendment to provide an additional $3 billion to CPRIT.
