Rise to the Top: Women leaders share experiences, advice for success at luncheon

According to Fortune magazine, only 5.4 percent of America’s 500 biggest companies have women at the helm.

On March 31, Rise to the Top, a luncheon program featuring women executives in Houston, offered the opportunity for women from all career fields and walks of life to share their professional experiences.

As a sponsor of the event, several Baylor College of Medicine physicians attended, shared information about the Lester and Sue Smith Breast Center’s same-day answers breast cancer program and participated in a candid conversation featuring a panel of women executives. The panel addressed triumphs and challenges of succeeding as a woman in today’s business world and included:

  • Ginger Kerrick, flight director, mission control, Johnson Space Center
  • Latha Ramchand, dean and professor of finance, C. T. Bauer College of Business at the University of Houston
  • Cindy Yeilding, senior vice president, BP America

Dr. Karla Sepulveda, assistant professor of radiology at Baylor, was in attendance and says the experience was both useful and enlightening.

“Listening to successful female leaders discuss the challenges they have faced and overcome is always a great opportunity not only for learning, but for inspiration,” she said.  “I found the panel particularly interesting because of the diversity of fields that were represented. The speakers were insightful, candid and remarkable women.”

Additionally, attendees had an opportunity to connect with each other, share key learnings and share information about the Lester and Sue Smith Breast Center’s same-day answers breast cancer program.

“I appreciated the shared message at our table; that women in leadership bring value to businesses, broaden the perspective and ultimately the influence bottom line,” Sepulveda said.
