Healthy Habits: For Dr. Karin Fox exercise includes fun

healthy-habits-foxIt can sometimes be difficult to find ways to stay healthy, so we’ve asked members of our Baylor College of Medicine community to share what they do in their daily lives to maintain a healthy lifestyle.

Dr. Karin Fox, assistant professor of obstetrics and gynecology, shares her healthy habits with us.

Q: What healthy decisions start your day?
A: Whenever possible, I pack my lunch to avoid getting so hungry that less healthy snacks become an easy option

Q: What is your go-to healthy breakfast?
A: Either gluten-free oats with almond milk or some “scrambled” tofu with vegetables – only takes 5 min to heat

Q: What is your favorite type of exercise?
A: Swimming, running, roller blading, rock climbing and doing Tae-kwon-do/kick boxing with my daughter, who is a black belt and assistant instructor. For me, activity should be fun, not work.

Q: What keeps you motivated during your workout? (music, tv, phone call, etc.)
A: The stress relief. I also like listening to music.

Q: What activities do you do when you can’t fit in a full workout?
A: I tend to run the stairs – it’s quicker than the elevators and gets your heart rate up, and I have been known to do lunges down the hallway in clinic

Q: What is your favorite healthy snack?
A: Fruit or nuts. Perfectly packaged for on-the-go.

Q: Do you take vitamins and if so, which ones?
A: I take B-12 on days I do not eat meat or animal proteins.

Q: What do you include in your child’s lunch?
A: For my kids, I encourage them to pick out healthy foods they enjoy to put into their meals/lunch.  They can choose anything they want as long as it is healthy- even if it costs a bit more for cherries, for example.  It’s still a better value than foods that are less nutritious, and gives them a sense of choice.

Q: How do you make an unhealthy recipe healthy (healthy substitutions?)
A: I try to find ways to make some favorite “comfort” foods from whole foods, when I cook at home.  There are a lot of great “clean eating” websites with wholesome, delicious recipes.

Q: What is your nighttime skincare regimen?
A: I use coconut oil to remove makeup and gentle face soap only.

Q: What is your go-to Houston restaurant for a healthy meal?
Zoe’s Kitchen or NAM noodles and More

Q: Do you use a pedometer or Fitbit and what is your daily step goal?
A: I don’t routinely use a pedometer.

Q: What is your favorite health tip that you live by?
A: Our bodies were meant to move; if your great-grandmother wouldn’t recognize what you are eating or the ingredients contain words you cannot pronounce (because it’s been so processed) reconsider your choices.
