In focus: Our guiding values

The name Baylor College of Medicine brings many things to mind – pioneering efforts in heart surgery and genetics, strength in research, well-prepared students, diversity, innovation, a pursuit of excellence. And while all of us know that Baylor College of Medicine is more than a College of Medicine, we’ve decided to make that abundantly clear in our new mission statement.

“Baylor College of Medicine is a health sciences university that creates knowledge and applies science and discoveries to further education, healthcare and community service locally and globally.”

A health sciences university appropriately describes what we are. We have four schools, after all; the Medical School, Graduate School of Biomedical Sciences, School of Allied Health Sciences and National School of Tropical Medicine. Our mission covers education, patient care and community service, with research underlying everything that we do.

Our mission as a health sciences university complements our vision statement, “Improving health through science, scholarship and innovation,” and our values of “Respect, Integrity, Innovation, Teamwork and Excellence.”

Every member of the Baylor College of Medicine community focuses on these values, as they are key to our commitment and to our success.

We all wear the “Baylor College of Medicine” name proudly because of what it carries with it. If you want to share your thoughts on Baylor’s mission, vision and values, and how you have experienced them as a patient, employee, student, faculty member or community member, please respond here or send me a note at president@bcm.edu.
