Middle school students get a head start at CampMed

Students at the Baylor College of Medicine Academy at Ryan got a head start on classes with CampMed at the DeBakey High School for Health Professions. The two-week summer program has a health science focus with five main classes that students rotate through: health science, math, reading, physical education and art.

A total of 100 rising sixth-graders from the new school took part in the program this summer, with several teachers from the school as well as high school students from DeBakey HSHP helping out with the lessons.

Earlier this year the Houston Independent School District’s Board of Education approved the creation of the Baylor College of Medicine Academy at Ryan, a new magnet middle school with a rigorous curriculum focused on the health sciences. The new magnet school will be located at the historic Ryan Middle School site, 2610 Elgin.

The school will be aligned with the Michael E. DeBakey High School for Health Professions, which BCM and HISD have jointly operated since 1972.
