Healthy Habits: Dr. Kim-Lan Czelusta runs marathons

It can sometimes be difficult to find ways to stay healthy, so we’ve asked members of our Baylor College of Medicine community to share what they do in their daily lives to maintain a healthy lifestyle.

Dr. Kim-Lan Czelusta, associate professor and vice chair for education in the Menninger Department of Psychiatry and Behavioral Sciences, shares some of her healthy habits with us.

Q: What health decisions start your day?Czelusta Healthy Habits
A: Early morning run with friends.

Q: What is your go-to healthy breakfast?
A: Toast pre-run and protein shake post-run.

Q: What is your favorite type of exercise?
A: Running.

Q: What keeps you motivated during your workout?
A: PR (personal record) at my next marathon, even in my 50s!

Q: What activities do you do when you can’t fit in a full workout?
A: House chores lol.

Q: What is your favorite healthful snack?
A: Fresh fruit.

Q: Do you take vitamins and if so, which ones?
A: Calcium due to osteopenia.

Q: How do you make an unhealthy recipe healthy (healthy substitutions)?
A: Add ground flax seed to baked goods, Greek yogurt instead of sour cream, egg whites instead of eggs.

Q: What is your nighttime skin regimen?
A: Facial cleanser and night moisturizer.

Q: What hobbies do you have to help you relax?
A: Audiobooks, movie night at home, family time.

Q: What is your go-to Houston restaurant for a healthy meal?
A: Pho noodle places in Chinatown.

Q: Do you use an activity tracker or Fitbit and what is your daily step goal?
A: Garmin forerunner watch. I track mileage and not steps. Run ~50 weekly miles spread over 6 days.

Q: What is your favorite health tip that you live by?
A: Just get out the door. (That’s often the hardest step.)
