In case you missed it: Shaved heads, daylight saving time, and more
You’ve made it through the week and Fridays at BCM Momentum we round up interesting news and events you may have missed.
More sun, less sleep
Did you notice days are beginning to be filled with more daylight? Don’t forget that Sunday, March 10 is daylight saving time and we’ll move our clocks forward. Dr. Philip Alapat, assistant professor of medicine at BCM and associate medical director of the BCM Sleep Center said the time change can be difficult for people who are already sleep deprived and for small children.
Alapat offers tips for preparing for the change and how to improve the quality of your sleep.
Shaved for a cause
Last week we shared the story of two BCM medical students preparing to shave their heads to raise money and awareness for pediatric cancer. BCM partnered with Texas Children’s Hospital for the St. Baldrick’s hosted head-shaving event. Check out the photos our friends Joshua Adams and Justin Badal shared from the event.
Pregnancy, infants and HIV
This week pediatric HIV and AIDs has dominated the news and BCM’s Dr. Mark Kline, chair of the Department of Pediatrics at Baylor College of Medicine and creator of the Baylor International Pediatric AIDS Initiative, spoke with several news outlets.
In an interview with Time magazine’s Healthland blog, Kline said:
“If we are doing our job of identifying pregnant women who are HIV positive, treating them and managing their infant accordingly,” he said, “We should be preventing close to 100 percent of cases of pediatric HIV.”
