Healthy Habits: Dr. Karen Horst enjoys yoga
It can sometimes be difficult to find ways to stay healthy, so we’ve asked members of our Baylor College of Medicine community to share what they do in their daily lives to maintain a healthy lifestyle.
Dr. Karen Horst, reproductive psychiatrist and assistant professor of obstetrics and gynecology, shares some of her healthy habits with us.
Question: What health decisions start your day?
Answer: How to work movement into my day.
Q: What is your go-to healthy breakfast?
A: Homemade banana bran muffin.
Q: What is your favorite type of exercise?
A: I love yoga because I find myself at home in my body through practicing it.
Q: What keeps you motivated during your workout?
A: How good it makes me feel – fewer body aches, more energy, more clearheaded.
Q: What activities do you do when you can’t fit in a full workout?
A: Walking briskly, taking stairs, doing push-ups or downward dogs in my office.
Q: What is your favorite healthful snack?
A: Currently, grapefruit.
Q: Do you take vitamins and if so, which ones?
A: I take magnesium-threonate for sleep and cognition and a multi-vitamin designed for postmenopausal women.
Q: What is your nighttime skin regimen?
A: Wash makeup off with an oil-based cleanser, then use an enzymatic facial cleanser using a washcloth to rinse for some exfoliation, then toner, vitamin A and vitamin C serums, eye cream and a hydrating nighttime moisturizer.
Q: What hobbies do you have to help you relax?
A: Cooking, reading, talking with friends, watching TV shows with my husband, exercising.
Q: What is your go-to Houston restaurant for a healthy meal?
A: Sushi (used to be Nippon) :'(
Q: Do you use an activity tracker or Fitbit and what is your daily step goal?
A: Apple Watch.
Q: What is your favorite health tip that you live by?
A: Practicing gratitude and noticing the good in my life. When something tastes good, I savor it and tell myself “yum,” for example.
