LED light therapy: How does it work on your skin?

Woman with LED Light Therapy mask on her face. You’ve probably seen the images of people using different colors of light-emitting diode (LED) light on their skin. But what is the purpose? And can it help improve your skin? Kim Chang, an aesthetician at Baylor College of Medicine, explains how LED light therapy works and whether it is the best treatment for your skin.

“LED light therapy induces adenosine triphosphate (ATP) production, which gives energy to your cells, helping the skin heal well. We use it for post-laser treatments, chemical peels and during facials” Chang said.

LED light therapy is best for people looking to brighten their skin if they have hyperpigmentation and for those with surface-level acne. It is not for those with epilepsy.
“There is blue and red LED light therapy,” Chang said. “Blue light helps treat surface-level acne. When you use it, you have to neutralize with the red light.”

Red light therapy can soften wrinkles and fine lines, reduce the appearance of surgical scars and improve overall skin health. In general, LED light therapy isn’t just for one-time use. Think of it as maintenance.

“With LED light therapy, like most cosmetic procedures, there is a maintenance process. To see benefits and good results, being consistent and diligent is key,” Chang said.

LED light therapy masks are now often sold in stores, allowing the everyday person to do this treatment at home. Chang says this option is safe to use; however, to see full benefits, don’t stop after just a month or so. If you plan to purchase an at-home LED light therapy treatment, be patient and results will show.
