February is a month dedicated to hearts in more ways than one. While many people focus on showing love during Valentine’s Day, it’s also American Heart Month – a time to spotlight heart health and advancements in cardiac care. At Baylor Medicine, these two themes join together in the work of Dr. Kenneth Liao, robotic heart surgeon, professor and chief of Cardiothoracic Transplantation and Circulatory Support, who has reached a notable milestone: performing more than 700 robotic heart surgeries.

Robotic heart surgery represents a breakthrough for patients with cardiac conditions. Historically, open-heart surgery required a large incision in the chest, extended recovery periods and significant post-operative pain. However, the minimally-invasive nature of robotic procedures means smaller incisions, reduced blood loss and less trauma to surrounding tissues. As a result, patients often experience fewer complications, shorter hospital stays and a faster return to normal activities. This can make a difference for individuals eager to return to daily life — or celebrate Valentine’s Day with loved ones — without an extended recovery period.

Over the years, Liao and his team at Baylor have embraced these advancements to offer patients more treatment options. Ranging from delicate mitral valve repairs to complex coronary artery bypass grafting, the range of robotic procedures leverages the precision of the technology. This high level of accuracy reduces the risk of complications and allows for a smoother path to recovery, underscoring Liao’s commitment to patient-centered care.

Reaching 700 successful robotic procedures is no small feat. It speaks to the surgeon’s experience, dedication to innovation and the trust he has built with both colleagues and patients. His pioneering efforts ensure that anyone facing heart surgery can explore advanced treatment options designed to improve outcomes and quality of life.

February is a reminder to treat our hearts with love, whether through small acts of kindness toward ourselves or by seeking the best possible care when medical intervention is needed. If you or a loved one is preparing for heart surgery, take a moment to learn more about robotic procedures. With smaller incisions, quicker recovery times and high success rates, robotic heart surgery allows patients to return home sooner, spend valuable time with family and focus on the joys of life.

Thanks to surgical advancements like these, we know that solutions are within reach, giving our hearts – and those of the people we love – the very best chance for a long, healthy life.
