Creative cardiology

A poem by Jingxiao Jin, MS1.

The heart too has its dramas
I know because I have felt with my
fingertips–its thud against its prison;
they don’t call it the rib cage
for nothing. Surely
it cannot be a coincidence that the cardiac cycle resembles dramatic narrative:
an atrial exposition; tightening of the myocardium as tension builds; the burst
of blood through
the aortic valve; and the
resolution, ventricular relaxation.
I like to believe that every heart-beat
echoes the sound of some greater
struggle — the clang and clamor
of the essential questions:
to yes or to no, to reap
or to sow, to live or
to go, the search
begins and
ends with
