Dr. Hotez goes to Washington
Dr. Peter Hotez, dean of the National School of Tropical Medicine at Baylor College of Medicine, testified June 27 before the U.S. House of Representatives Committee on Foreign Affairs Subcommittee on Africa, Global Health, Global Human Rights and International Organizations.
He recently wrote about his testimony for The Academy of Medicine, Engineering and Science of Texas blog about the effort at BCM to engage in translational research and development for diagnosing and creating vaccines for the 17 major diseases of poverty, commonly referred to as neglected tropical diseses.

BCM researchers earn accolades, grant
Dr. Huda Zoghbi, professor of molecular and human genetics, neuroscience, pediatrics and neurology, and director of the Jan and Dan Duncan Neurological Research Institute at Texas Children’s Hospital will be honored in October by with the University of Pittsburgh School of Medicine’s 2013 Dickson Prize in Medicine. Zoghbi, also a Howard Hughes Medical Institute investigator, will receive the award on Oct. 3, and deliver the Dickson Prize in Medicine Lecture during Science2013-Convergence.

Dr. Martha Mims, chief of the hematology and oncology section in the NCI-designated Dan L. Duncan Cancer Center at BCM, has been named the recipienct of the Ben and Margaret Love Foundation Bobby Alford Award for Academic Clinical Professionalism.
“I am grateful to have a career that allows me to serve others, and I try and instill this sense of appreciation in the students, residents and fellows who train with me,” said Mims, also an associate professor of medicine at BCM.
Baylor College of Medicine and Texas Children’s Cancer Center pediatric oncologist Dr. Jason Shohet has received a grant from Braden’s Hope for Childhood Cancer to research treatments for high-risk neuroblastoma.
“Despite our most aggressive attempts at cure with high-dose chemotherapy, radiation and surgery, overall long-term survival is less than 45 percent. Our laboratory has focused on developing novel tumor-specific therapies to target neuroblastoma,” Shohet said.

Summer fun, math and health sciences
Before students arrive this fall for the inaugural class of the Baylor College of Medicine Academy at Ryan, 100 rising sixth-graders got a jump start through CampMed. The two-week summer program includes health sciences, math, reading, physical education and art.
