Recipe: DIY trail mix just in time for fall

If you read the Healthy Habits series, you may notice that snacks like peanuts and almonds are popular among Baylor College of Medicine experts.

At 170 calories per serving (recipe makes 10 servings), this high-fiber trail mix from the Culinary Health Education for Families (CHEF) program at the Children’s Hospital of San Antonio is an easy, filling snack to make at home and eat on the go.

The CHEF program offers classes to families and children that focus on simple cooking skills and nutrition education.

Do-It-Yourself Trail Mix

  • 1/4 cup pumpkin seeds
  • 1/2 cup walnuts
  • 1/2 cup almonds
  • 1/4 cup dark chocolate chips (70 percent cocoa or higher)
  • 1/4 cup dried cranberries
  • 1/4 cup dried apricots

Directions

  1. Combine all ingredients in a bowl.
  2. Scoop out 1/4 cup servings for on-the-go snacks.
