Prepare for hurricane season!

The start of the Atlantic hurricane season is less than one month away, and there is no better time to prepare than now. Forecasters predict another active season – check out tips below to best prepare before the season officially begins on June 1.

If you are driving in severe weather, do not attempt to cross flowing streams, as your vehicle may stall or you could lose control. Never drive your vehicle around warning signs for barricades. See more flood safety tips from the National Weather Service.

It’s also crucial to assess the need for flood insurance. It takes 30 days from the time of purchase for flood insurance to go into effect, so plan early. See tips from FEMA on what to consider when purchasing insurance.

Helping seniors prepare

For elderly individuals who may live alone or with a caregiver, Dr. Angela Catic says it’s important to have at least seven to 14 days of medication on hand. Catic, an assistant professor in the Huffington Center On Aging at Baylor, also suggests labeling all assistive devices such as walkers, hearing aids and canes with the individual’s name, phone number and address.
