Recipe: Healthy fruit smoothie perfect for hot summer days

Summer doesn’t officially begin until June 21, but Houstonians are already feeling the heat. Rather than grabbing a sugary drink or your favorite ice cream, check out this low-calorie alternative from the Baylor College of Medicine Sugar, Heart and Life Program.

At 121 calories per serving (recipe makes three servings), this healthy fruit smoothie will quench your thirst without the extra sugar.

Fruit Smoothie

Ingredients

  • 1 cup fat-free, plain yogurt
  • 6 medium strawberries
  • 1 cup pineapple, crushed, canned in juice
  • 1 medium banana
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • 4 ice cubes

Preparation

  1. Place all ingredients in blender and puree until smooth.
  2. Serve in frosted glass.

Watch portion sizes for smoothies and fruit juices. Remember, fruits have carbs too.
